Code Editors

Thanks for checking out my Code Editors Resource page! It’s likely you found this page through my “Coda 2” affiliate link, and you’re now wondering why you’ve been sent here rather than to the Coda 2 website. While Coda 2 is still my #1 code editor, I’ve decided to part with my “Coda 2 is the only editor you should use” mentality and show you some of the other amazing code editors out there.

Coda 2 for Mac

Coda 2 is my favourite code editor. I exclusively use Coda 2 when working on client projects because of the features baked right into the software. A beautiful User Interface with tabbed navigation, a super sidebar, and a simple layout. The features are outrageous and extensive, with code folding, smart complete, auto indentation, GIT integration, a built-in terminal, iCloud support — to name a few.

Adobe Brackets

[label style=”dark”]Price: Free[/label] [label style=”dark”]OS: Mac, Windows, Linux[/label]

Adobe Brackets has been competing for the #1 spot in my favourite code editor list! It’s open-source, full featured, has a beautiful UI and does exactly what code editors should do — it gets out of the way so you can focus on coding. I’ve been using Brackets a lot lately, and I featured it exclusively in my Ultimate Web Developer Course. If you’re looking for a free code editor that rivals the paid software, Brackets is for you. Bonus: it’s OS agnostic!

Sublime Text

[label style=”dark”]Free Trial: Yes[/label] [label style=”dark”]Price: $70[/label] [label style=”dark”]OS: Mac, Windows, Linux[/label]

A full fledged code editor that features side-by-side mode for comparing documents, full screen mode, and a whole bunch of other great features. One of the best editors out there, and if I didn’t love Coda 2 so much I would use this one. The price tag for Sublime Text is $70, but comes with a free trial.

TextWrangler_Logo

TextWrangler

[label style=”dark”]Price: Free[/label] [label style=”dark”]OS: Mac[/label]

TextWranger is a very simple yet capable text editor. It’s a no-frills solution, and is a very good option for those who are just starting to code as you have no choice but to hand-code everything — since there are no extra features. I used TextWrangler when I first started learning to code, and my typing skills (and speed) have greatly benefitted from using it. The best part? It’s free!

notepad++

Notepad++

[label style=”dark”]Price: Free[/label] [label style=”dark”]OS: Windows[/label]

Notepad++ is a free source code editor and Notepad replacement that supports several languages. It’s a straightforward, minimal code editor for PC users and has been a popular code editor among my students.

Espresso by MacRabbit

Espresso turbo-charges your workflow with the perfect blend of features. Speed through day-to-day edits with extensive language support, contextual completions, powerful smart snippets, and Zen actions. I used Espresso exclusively for a couple years and loved it! It’s comparable to Coda 2, and an all-around excellent code editor. This one rings in at $75 but comes with a 15-day free trial.
