I’m Brad Hussey. I’ve been a professional freelancer for the better part of a decade, and I’ve put together a free video series over the next few weeks all about Getting Started as a Freelancer!
Today, I’m going to give you SIX simple steps you can actually do TODAY, to give your freelance biz the kick in the arse it needs.
STEP ONE:
Ask yourself WHY you want to do this. What’s your MAIN REASON for wanting to become a freelancer? Is it freedom? Earning potential? Time with family? What is it for you? Write it down.
STEP TWO:
Set a GOAL. It must be BIG, SPECIFIC, TIME BOUND. For example. I want to Earn $50k as a Freelancer by the end of 2018.
STEP THREE:
Reverse engineer your goal by working backward. For example: $50k in 24 months = $2,084/mo. Which means you need to do 4 projects x $520 each month or 2 projects x $1042 each month. Write it down. Plan it out.
STEP FOUR:
Break it down into actionable, tangible steps. There’s a great book called The ONE Thing by Gary Keller. It says in order to achieve your ONE Thing (Your GOAL in this case)…
Ask yourself, What do you need to do THIS YEAR in order to achieve your ONE Thing?
What do you need to do This MONTH?
This WEEK?
TODAY?
RIGHT NOW?
Write it all down so you know EXACTLY what do to at each step of the way.
STEP FIVE:
Create a system to kill procrastination. There’s a great video by Tim Ferriss on Big Think, he says… Break your goal down into tiny, ridiculously simple tasks, that are so easy to complete that you have no choice but to do it.
For example: How do you make $50k as a freelancer this year?
You book $4200 / mo in gigs… Go smaller!
Book one client first. Smaller still…
Contact 50 people. Even smaller…
Email ONE person!
Create reminders to email ONE person each hour, build on top of that.
Each step you take builds on top of the other. Eventually, you’re emailing leads, booking clients, building a business.
